I have to admit that even with the “bad” barrel and blasting ammo I could get around 4 1/2 inch groups but the barrel would lead up rapidly and severely.

Serial numbers are NOT unique to one firearm. Send some photos, and perhaps I can narrow it down for you. If the gun is laying on a table, grip down, barrel pointing to the right, look just below and to the right of the cylinder on the flat part of the frame. That is where it is on my .38 snubby Taurus.
